MSE’s FREE Essay Competition

Medschoolentry is a Consultant-Led Medical and Dental Admission Service. Director Dr Rizvia Khan have a strong background and passion for medical education regardless of background or circumstances. They wish to cultivate critical thinking, empathy and reasoning – qualities needed for medical and dental students.

The MSE Essay Competition is designed to support students in going beyond the classroom and begin to develop the skills needed to thrive in an academic career. The topics have been carefully chosen to support your medical and dental application.

A student’s submission is assessed by the Directors of MSE, two Senior NHS Consultants who have over 50 years combined experience in the NHS and Medical Education, as well as ex-Medical School Interviewers.

Registration

We’re delighted to announce the launch of our FREE Essay Competition, designed to help you stand out in your UCAS application and medical/dental interviews. This is an independent mini-research project that you can confidently reference in your personal statement and discuss at interview – whether or not you win.

 

Registration is now open. Applicants must be home applicants residing in the UK. Unfortunately, this competition is closed to international students. Candidates must be in year 12 or older. Home schoolers are very welcome. Late admissions are not accepted.

Entry is free. All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Topics to Choose

Choose ONE topic from the list below:

  1. Prevention Is Better Than Cure: How Can Medicine and Dentistry Reduce Health Inequalities?
  2. Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Tool, Threat, or Transformation?
  3. Autonomy vs Beneficence: Should Doctors and Dentists Ever Override Patient Choice?

Word Limit

Key details:

  • Maximum length: 4,000 characters
  • Harvard or Vancouver referencing required
  • Must be entirely your own work (no AI, no external support)
  • Open to Medicine & Dentistry applicants* (UCAS 2026 and beyond)

Submission

To submit your essay, download and fill in the booking form. Then email this form, along with your essay, to info@medschoolentry.uk.

Your essay should be in a Word document format.

In the body of the email, please put:

First Name – Last Name – Medic

or

First Name – Last Name – Dentist

Plagiarism

All essays will be submitted through a plagiarism checker. Any work found not to be the original work of the student will be eliminated, and their school may be notified.

At the end of your essay, please write:

‘I confirm that this work is entirely my own and that I have acknowledged all sources where applicable. No part of this essay has been plagiarised or submitted previously.’

This is not part of the 1500-word count. Failure to write this will result in your entry being eliminated.
