Med School Entry is a Consultant-Led Medical and Dental Admission Service. Directors Dr Afrosa Ahmed and Dr Rizvia Khan have a strong background and passion for medical education regardless of background or circumstances. They wish to cultivate critical thinking, empathy and reasoning – qualities needed for medical and dental students.

The MSE Essay Competition is designed to support students in going beyond the classroom and begin to develop the skills needed to thrive in an academic career. The topics have been carefully chosen to support your medical and dental application.

A student’s submission is assessed by the Directors of MSE, two Senior NHS Consultants who have over 50 years combined experience in the NHS and Medical Education, as well as ex-Medical School Interviewers.

Entry Process

Registration

Registration is now open and closes on 1st August at 10am. Applicants must be home applicants residing in the UK. Unfortunately, this competition is closed to international students. Candidates must be in year 12 or older. Home schoolers are very welcome. Late admissions are not accepted.

Entry is free.

All participants will receive a certificate of participation.

Word Limit

Choose ONE topic from the list below:

  • Designing Tomorrow’s Doctors/Dentists
  • The NHS – a System Worth Saving?
  • A Graying Nation
  • Access – Equality for All

The maximum word limit is 1500 (not including tables, bibliography, references, data or graphs, etc).

Submission

To submit your essay, download and fill in the booking form. Then email this form, along with your essay, to admin@medschoolentry.uk.

Your essay should be in a Word document format.

In the body of the email, please put:

First Name – Last Name – Medic

or

First Name – Last Name – Dentist

Plagiarism

All essays will be submitted through a plagiarism checker. Any work found not to be the original work of the student will be eliminated, and their school may be notified.

At the end of your essay, please write:

‘I confirm that this work is entirely my own and that I have acknowledged all sources where applicable. No part of this essay has been plagiarised or submitted previously.’

This is not part of the 1500-word count. Failure to write this will result in your entry being eliminated.

Results

The writers will be notified by email, and their name (and photo) will appear on the Med School Entry website and/or social media platforms. Winners will be notified by 6 pm on Thursday, 31 August London.

Prizes

  • 1st Prize
    The Ultimate 12-week Interview Course by Dr Khan, Every Sunday morning 10am-12pm. September 21st to December 14th.
  • 2nd Prize
    1 hour Online 121 Mock Interview tailored to the university of your choice with Dr Ahmed.
  • 3rd Prize
    How to Choose 4 Medical Schools with Dr Ahmed. Friday September 5th 6-8pm or How to Choose 4 Dental Schools with Dr Ahmed, Sunday September 7th 4-5.30pm.

These sessions are online, live, and not recorded, with date and times fixed (except the 121 mock interview with Dr Ahmed).

The judges’ decisions are final.
