Medical and Dental Personal Statements: What’s Changed?

Applicants are now required to answer three structured questions designed to explore motivation, reflection and readiness for a career in medicine in a clearer, more focused way.

Many medical and dental schools use the statements to shortlist candidates, while some use them in the interview. Regardless of how the universities use them, you will still need to complete this on the UCAS platform.

The 3 Key Questions

Personal statements are changing from one longer text to three separate sections, each with a different question to help shape the focus of student’s answers. Each section will have a minimum character count of 350 characters, which is clearly labelled on the question boxes and an overall character counter, to ensure students know they are on track.

The new questions are as follows:

Why do you want to study medicine?
Applicants must demonstrate genuine motivation, insight into the profession, and a clear understanding of what a medical career involves.

What experiences have prepared you for medicine?
This includes work experience, volunteering, wider reading and super-curricular activities, with emphasis on reflection, learning and personal growth rather than simply listing activities.

What personal qualities and values make you suited to medicine?
Students should evidence skills such as communication, teamwork, resilience, empathy and professionalism, aligning their responses with NHS values and real examples.

What is not changing?

The personal statement will still be 4000 characters in total; this includes spaces.

The content of the personal statement will remain broadly the same- it will just be split across three sections rather than one long piece.

The expectations and quality for what students need to cover are mostly unchanged.
